Needing info about Church of LDS baptism

My daughter and I have been invited to a friend's baptism at a local church of the Latter Day Saints. I was wondering if anyone has attended one or is a part of the church? What can we expect, length, etc? Are gifts expected?

Help, please! I'm close to googling it. I want to be nice, but I am out of my depth here (raised by hippies, no organized religion in sight.)

Thanks for your help!

Re: Needing info about Church of LDS baptism

could you just call your friend and ask her to fill you in?  or would that not be kosher?

ps i'm guessing it's going to be very long

I would second the long guess. I'm also surprised non-LDS can attend!

Re: Needing info about Church of LDS baptism

Me too! I'm going to ask my in-laws; they're Mormon. But I thought I'd get another opinion here too.

It's my daycare lady, and we aren't super close friends. She's very nice, but I have to say I was surprised at the invitation. But it's a big day for her daughter and she's very excited about that, so I'd like to honor the occasion.

Re: Needing info about Church of LDS baptism

I was almost baptized LDS, but in the end things changed.  Have attended a few and its what you would typically expect from the non-LDS baptisms (i.e. other christian faiths).

LDS celebrate a baptism by full immersion (into water), with prayers, blessings, songs, etc.  Can be as non-traditional as friends and family gathering at the lake to very traditional, where the immersion occurs at a local church (not temple).  Dress accordingly(ie. "church clothes").  Sometimes they offer a dessert (cookies and punch) following, you can ask your hosts.

As for gifts, I think a simple card congratulating them on their baptism would suffice for those compelled to give a gift, but one is not necessary or expected.

Now that I look at the date of the post... hopefully this just adds a bit more info to those curious, seeing as I'm 8 months late in a reply....
